Self Portrait in Blue
2019, 18" x 24", oil on canvas
My self portrait features my cheeky smile as a way to fully embrace a part of my appearance that I used to be very insecure about. I like now that they show my joyful energy and warm personality.
The blue in this piece represents joy and a feeling of calm or
comfort. I purposely worked with the color blue rather than a
more predictable color like yellow or pink because even though
blue is typically seen as a sad color, I like the range of emotions
that blue is capable of expressing.
While creating this piece, I focused on balancing colors and
incorporating the blue throughout my face so that it seems like
one cohesive painting.
Memory
2018, 11" x 14", oil on board
This is a painting is a commemorative piece for my grandmother. She had Alzheimer's and used to live with my family. I don't remember anything from the last years of her life except for us worrying all the time about her wandering away. As stressful and exhausting those years were for us, in this piece I reflect on an easily forgotten perspective from my grandmother's point of view -- how terrified and lonely she must have always felt in those years.
The faded unfinished corner reflects my grandmother's
feeling of being lost, both literally and mentally, and the blurriness
of the bus stop sign represents her constant yearning for a
destination that didn't exist
